Reference Book Shelf: Use it!

This tip deals with a part of our studio you may not have visited since your orientation. It’s our reference shelves area, behind booth four, and we’re hoping to reacquaint you with this very important resource area.

Not only are there a variety of dictionaries to help you find pronunciations for material you’re unfamiliar with, but there are also texts to help you with unusual abbreviations you may encounter. Our goal is to accurately transcribe all the material that the author has written.

We are doing a disservice to our students if we just stumble through names and terms simply because we haven’t checked in the reference area for assistance.

A couple of key books to take note of are:

Biographical Dictionary - to help with name pronunciations

Geographical Dictionary - to help with location pronunciations

“Larry’s Speakeasy Guide for Spoken Math.”

There are also multiple language dictionaries and some very specific types of references like star charts and a list of all the Texas counties (with proper pronunciation).

So please, when in doubt, readers and directors should both take a moment to search the reference shelves for help with unfamiliar pronunciations.  It’ll make a big difference!
